Man’s Best Friend: Military Working Dogs

There are some genuine qualities that all dogs possess – faithfulness, compassion, and loyalty.  And of course playfulness.  It’s no wonder that most dogs become honorary members of each family they’re a part of.  One unique thing that we’ve seen here at Just Military Loans is that some dogs actual serve in the with some of our military loan clients.  These military working dogs (MWD’s) are heroes just like the men and women who serve alongside them.

We thought it would be interesting to find some amazing stories of some of these canines.  Here are some that top our list:

1.  Dogs Of War: Photos Remembering The Military’s Canine Heroes – Read the touching stories of various military working dogs who have died during their service.  Kevin, a dog who died of cancer, was a great patrol explosive detector dog who meant a lot to his handler of four years.  And Staff Sgt. Robert Calhoun was very close to his MWD Rony, for very good reason – Rony had saved his life when they went into an abandoned compound and found a 155-round before Calhoun could step on the pressure plate.  He is the reason they were able to come home.

2.  Two Dogs To Be Inducted As Officers At Ft. Huachuca - Staff Sgt. Beast and Sgt. Rowan were have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since numerous times over the past six years.  Both have served faithfully and saved countless lives during their missions overseas.  Read more to find out more of their induction as officers at Fort Huachuca, AZ last week.

3.  Military Working Dogs: What Happens After They Serve?If you wonder what happens to dogs after they serve in the military, you’ll be happy to know that most are adopted into caring homes.  This article brings to light how some dogs have similar injuries as our own soldiers – everything from arthritis to PTSD.  Learn more how you can get involved in adopting one of this military dogs.

Memorial Day just passed, but it’s not too late to show your gratitude to both human and canine soldiers.  Whether you’re welcomed by your excited Boxer or serving side-by-side by a frontline military working dog, remember to be thankful for man’s best friend.
